Time Out!

If there is one accessory I cannot function without, it's a watch.

Checking the time is a nervous function of human beings. However, using your phone to check the time is not always appropriate in all situations (class!). So, to avoid the terrible 21st century habit, I suggest investing in a watch.

Growing up, Baby-G watches were the hottest accessory. While Baby-G's can do some incredibly cool things, it made it very difficult for me to switch to an analogue watch (which I wish I had done sooner). Analogue watches are more mature, and can truly make a statement.

My most recent investment (now that I'm making money again):

I love my new watch! I think the bright blue is quite lovely and lets my watch double as a bracelet. I previously owned a Marc by Marc Jacob watch and have never been disappointed with the quality (sadly, I lost it).

In all my years of having watches I have to say the most important decision rests in choosing the strap. I have had metal, silicon, ceramic, and leather watches and must stand by my decision to get a metal band this time around. While leather is my favorite look, it just cannot be worn too frequently because of water and marking. The sweat from your wrists warps the leather and the small bit of water that gets on your watch from washing your hands changes the quality. Silicon, while sometimes more comfortable, can easily change color - excluding black. Ceramic watches are usually covered in a layer of paint - which begins to chip away after time. Having a stainless steel band allows one to fully enjoy the abilities of a water resistant watch and not worry about color.

Note: depending on how much money you are willing to spend, the metal may turn. See if a band is made of stainless steel or a finer metal.

Over the past few years the "stack" as become a popular trend, usually involving an over-sized face watch and some bangles. The look is actually very cute and can help make a large watch look less awkward.

Are You Ready Boots?

Are You Ready Boots?

Hello Friends,

Yesterday I began going through the necessary stock up items for the fall season. Today, we are going to dive into perhaps the most important accessory - the boot.

While Gisele looks fabulous completely naked (save for her over the knee boots) in the Harper's Bazaar editorial , the piece is a statement to the necessity of the boot in fall fashion. This is why designers have worked to give you options depending on comfort need, occasion, and type of weather.

Starting from the bottom and going up - we have the ankle boot or Chelsea Boot. Ankle boots are adorable and tend to be more multi-purposed than other boots. The heel is optional depending on the statement you need to make and there are endless ways to style them (cuffed jeans, into leggings, etc.).

Some extra reading opportunities: on cuffing and styling.

Here are just a few really cute bootie looks.

Ankle Booties

My personal favorite is easily the riding boot. Equestrian boots are extremely elegant and highlight the gentle curve of the calf (and cover more of your leg from the wind). Riding boots in particular are great friends of the sock and can become extremely well insulated without making you appear on the set of an 80's workout tape (legwarmers, anyone?)

While the Frye Melissa boot is probably the hottest riding boot currently - it costs a fortune (so beautiful, read on the making of Frye boots here. So I suggest looking into some other great riding boot stylists like Franco Sarto, Ralph Lauren, and Adrienne Vittadini. Refinery 29 has plenty of suggestions here and here on how to nab your perfect boot.

Take the vogue quiz to see if you're an equestrian boot girl or a motorcycle one.

Finally, the inevitable cold weather boot. Definitely not the cutest (Ugg has tried really hard to reform the look), but completely necessary for rain and snow.

Important - WATERPROOF YOUR BOOTS IF THEY ARE NOT ALREADY. This means that you should really take care of your good winter boots. Also, do not assume that your boot is made for all types of weather. Uggs, for example, should not get very wet - their purpose is solely to insulate your foot. If you find yourself in an extremely wet fall and winter climate look into "bean" or "duck" boots - made popular by L.L. Bean and Sperry.

Here are some ideas on how to make your bean boots work with your outfit and how to waterproof your Uggs.

Brr.

Hello lovely friends,

It is no longer the pleasant kind of Fall where you admire the change in the foliage, but rather the bone cold Fall that no one looks forward to. It is this unpleasant stretch we must push through until Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The Christmas music has begun playing in my J.Crew, but the warm part of the holiday spirit is yet to appear.

Just look how stoked Kanye is to be bundled up!

That being said, time for some hot new fashion!

Look:

  • Great functional and statement making coat
  • Vest - either worn by itself or layered under a fab coat
  • Cozy accessories - because no appendage should be left behind

I cannot rave more about the Barbour I purchased in England two months ago - that thing really keeps you warm and can survive a downpour. It was certainly a costly thing to acquire - but the amount of lifetime care provided by the company ensures that you get use out of it for decades.
